About Kait

What do you do?
I am currently employed as a Digital Video Script Developer for education materials at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. I love what I do, and the people who I work with very much. My job mostly entails working with a content expert (usually an instructor) to develop a script that will be concise, easy to understand, and appropriate for online consumption. It's a lot of reading, writing, and re-writing.

Why do you blog?
Throughout High-school and University one of my favorite things to do with friends was stage photoshoots. No joke. One of my best friends is a very talented photographer and we used to take pictures of each other all the time. She moved to Ontario several years ago and I soon realized that for all the time she had been gone, I had no photos! I missed documenting my life, my relationship, and my evolving style. After trolling fashion blogs such as Delightfully Tacky, I decided to create this blog as a way of motivating myself to journal, and to take photographs. Turns out, I love blogging!

What did you take in school?
I graduated from Grant MacEwan University with my Bachelor of Applied Communications and Professional Writing in May of 2011. That means that I took a lot of English classes; including some in editing, journalism, technical writing, speech writing, writing for the web, and my favorite, screenwriting. One thing that didn't stick? Grammar. I apologize in advance.

What's your dream job?
I've always wanted to write for a living and I've been really lucky so far. Working at NAIT however lead me to become comfortable and complacent, I'm excited to pursue my dream job in the next few months. I'll be beginning online courses through UBC for narrative design and writing for video games. It's my dream to write video games that include diverse characters and strong depictions of women.

Are the curls natural?
They are. To this day no one in my family can figure out where my curly hair came from, and I did endure a number of milk man jokes growing up. I get asked about my hair a lot so I've written a couple of posts on the subject. I posted about my  hair care routine and my favorite beauty products here and here.  I absolutely love the book Curly Girl, so if you happen to be one of the many ladies struggling with taking care of your stifled curls, buy it yesterday. It really helped me figure out my curls!

Where do you shop?
I shop at a lot of different places. In town I love Urban Outfitters, Anthropology, The Gap, H&M, The Bay and Winners. I also do a bit of online shopping at places like Modcloth, Etsy and ASOS. I do a little bit of thrifting, and I'm trying to get into it more.

What Camera do you use?
When I got started with this blog I was using a Sony point and shoot, and my phone, but the camera I am currently using is the Nikon D5100. It's a great entry level DSLR, and perfect for taking self portraits (the articulating view screen is the best thing since sliced toast). I use my Nikkor 35mm lens for all of my pictures, and pretty much rely on my wireless shutter remote!

Who is this Nick guy I keep hearing about?
Nick and I met through a mutual friend at the premier of Watchmen on June 6th 2009, and dated for five years before tying the knot July 13th 2014. I journaled about our engagement and the subsequent wedding planning on a separate blog,  Love Grows Love.

Tell me more about your wedding!
How sweet of  you to ask. ;) In case you're planning a wedding in Edmonton Alberta, I'll tell you that our reception venue was the Yellowhead Brewery, our photographer was Genevieve Renee Photographie (from Calgary), and our live band was The Last Calls. The dress is called Olivia and it's by Watters Wtoo, I purchased it at Novelle Bridal in Edmonton.

Tell us about your pets.
My second favorite subject! Nick and I are proud pet parents to Tommy the Cat, and Lola the Pup. Tommy is a rescued Mackerel Tabby and Lola came to us through a lady from Nicks work (Alberta Health Services) who ended up with an oops litter after rescuing a dog who hadn't been spayed yet. She is a Border Collie, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel cross. Nick's parents adopted one of Lola's littermates, Molly, and they are the  best of friends.
